Great Post! I just wrote about this on my startupkidsline blog too. We actually just did some user testing of our site last weekend. Sat behind the user and just observed how she used our site, how she navigated.

I can not recommend it enough. I could not believe the glitches we found with our website, or how some things that didn't bother us would have made her leave the site. Now we've re-vamped and we're still tweaking, but then we'll do ANOTHER round of user testing.

You have a great point about being too familiar with your site; of course you know how to move through it and where everything is - the question is does anybody else?

Good luck with your changes. It's looking good - and it's a forever ongoing process anyways.

Oh, I also wanted to second your thoughts on how hard it is to get real feedback. After we changed the navigation for our site we'd hear "oh, it's so much better, I didn't want to tell you before.." UGH, why not? Tell me everything. But people just say "it's nice".

Thanks for writing this!
